Coastcom Patents New Technology
ALAMEDA, CA , APRIL 25, 2002 -- Coastcom, a leading manufacturer
of drop-and-insert, and cross connect data communications equipment,
has recently filed a patent for a new communications protection
protocol. Route on Failure™ (RoF) is a new network protection
protocol currently designed to enhance the route protection capabilities
of an AIM and D/I Mux network. To define this protocol, it must
be noted that the most common methods of span protection are node
arbitration and centralized management. These two methods share
a common weakness in that they rely on communication between nodes
during a span failure. Due to the nature of the failure this communication
may be impossible. This is where Route on Failure shines. Route
on Failure uses preset rules predetermined during a time of non-failure.
During a failure, the algorithms that invoke the rules operate without
communication between the nodes. Each node operates independently.
When the span failure is repaired, the nodes automatically return
to their normal mode of operation. RoF produces a two-tier level
of T1 span and card protection. For T3, RoF protects both the span
and node or just the node, depending on the network managers preference.
This unique feature:
- does not require internode communication during a span failure
- provides 2 tiers of span protection
- does not require a non-revenue span, thus saving money
- provides automatic recovery upon failure correction
